Talking Heads
“Once In A Lifetime”
From Stop Making Sense

I’ve been thinking a lot about Stop Making Sense this week, and the ways David Byrne and Jonathan Demme rebelled against the conventions of depicting live music in film and ended up coming up with results that were far more cinematic and better framed the interesting visual aspects of live music. This performance of “Once In A Lifetime” is presented mainly a long, uncut still shot of Byrne in stark chiaroscuro lighting, with the emphasis placed on his physicality and the way he inhabits the uptight, confused character in the song. When the camera finally pulls back for the climax, he’s still boxed in by the frame, but he’s no longer the entire focus, and his body language shifts - he looks both exhausted and relieved.

Note to self…must listen to this again. Great album.

I never tire of this. Pere Ubu’s Non Alignment Pact. An absolute classic!

Detroit punk band Death had a long hiatus between their formation and subsequent breakup in the Seventies and their rediscovery in 2009. Now, the band is releasing “Relief,” their first new single since 1976. “The message of the song is rock & roll brings on relief,” said bassist Bobby Hackney, “Relief from the mundane, relief from the ordinary and definitely rock & roll has always been associated with relief from work.” Death is in the midst of working on a full-length album and is planning tour dates for this year as well.

Don’t be fooled by the dodgy look. The Death album was an absolute belter…if you can track it down…

FUGAZI - WAITING ROOM

live recording from sept 3rd, 1987: the first ever fugazi show

the public debut of this song is undoubtely one of the most important moments in music history.  this version has joe on backing vocals (guy picciotto was in the audience but not yet the band) and is played at a significantly slower tempo

One of the best albums I’d heard up to that point. I had been a huge fan of Big Black & the At Action Park album rounded things off nicely ;0)

He played Scrabble on Facebook almost the entire time; I learned some Scrabble tricks. He would alternate between that and writing on his food blog. I don’t even know if he remembers what our album sounds like….You’ve gotta love Steve Albini don’t you…
